New Blue Chalk Documentary “Firebreak” to Screen at Bend Film Festival

PORTLAND, OR, Aug. 23, 2024 - Blue Chalk Media is thrilled to announce that its newest documentary feature, Firebreak, will screen at the Bend Film Festival, which takes place from October 10th-13th, 2024, in Bend, Oregon.

Directed and produced by Blue Chalk’s Co-Creative Director, Kenzie Bruce, Firebreak tells a powerful story of resilience and climate justice. The film follows Brandon Smith and Royal Ramey, two men who met fighting wildfires while imprisoned in California’s penal system. Despite institutional barriers, financial pressures, and mounting environmental dangers, they are now training others like them to become professional firefighters. Their journey is one of determination and a commitment to making the world a better place.

“We’re incredibly excited to share Firebreak with the world,” says Kenzie Bruce. “Brandon and Royal’s story is one that needs to be told, and I’m honored to have been allowed to bear witness to a portion of their journey. This film is a testament to the strength of the human spirit and the ingenuity and grit demonstrated by our two main characters.”

Blue Chalk Media’s Founder and CEO, Greg Moyer, shares this excitement: “Firebreak represents everything we strive for at Blue Chalk—telling stories that matter and inspire change. We believe this film will resonate deeply with audiences and spark important conversations about criminal justice and climate change.”

For 21 years, the Academy-qualifying Bend Film Festival has celebrated the best in independent cinema from the Pacific Northwest and beyond. This year, several Blue Chalk Media team members will be attending and are looking forward to connecting with filmmakers and audiences alike.

“Firebreak” is slated to screen on Thursday, October 10, at 2:45 pm. Tickets can be purchased here
